By 10:40 a.m., ITS staff finished restoring all files and access for the home folders of the remaining affected users.

The data was restored from the latest backup, which was from July 9.

By 11:45 p.m., ITS staff have restored all files and access for the home folders of half of the affected users.

The data was restored from the latest backup, which was from July 9.

Restoration continues for the other users, who still do not have access to their data.

Progress on restoration continues. Current best-case estimate would have one of the two areas, which affects half of the users with the problem, online this evening. Complete restoration will extend into tomorrow.

ITS staff have continued to work on restoring files overnight and into today. The current estimates on completed restoration are not yet precise as some challenges in restoration have been encountered. Another update today should have a better estimate. Restored files are still not yet accessible by users and applications.

Between 2:10 p.m. and 4:10 p.m., PASS experienced connectivity issues in which access to data in the storage system became unavailable. All PASS dependent services were affected as a result of the issue.

It is now known that due to multiple and simultaneous failures of disks within PASS, data loss occurred for two areas of the storage system. As a result, data confirmed to have been lost will need to be restored from backup files. The loss of data has affected only user home directories.

Affected users will not be able to access their home directories at this time.

Original Alert

A major hardware failure has occurred. The extent of damage is currently unknown. We are in the process of determining the impact.
