Resolved: Resolved: Resolved: Bogus e-mail messages circulating

Last updated on November 18, 2016 at 11:06AM

Various e-mail messages from have been circulating that claim to be from Penn State. The messages offer free laptops or scholarship opportunities and invite students to click on a link for more information. These e-mails did not come from Penn State, and may be part of a phishing scam. Anyone who receives these e-mails should delete them, and should not respond to them. The ITS Security Operations and Services (SOS) office is investigating the problem. Phishing scams are perpetrated by criminals, who use fraudulent e-mails or fake Web sites to seek sensitive or personal information (such as credit card or social security numbers) for illegal interests. ITS reminds the University community to use caution when responding to all forms of e-mail. For tips on how to avoid phishing scams, visit Students, faculty, and staff with questions or concerns about e-mail they receive should contact the IT Service Desk; see for contact information.
