Resolved: Code Upgrade on PSU Border Routers

Last updated on August 26, 2016 at 12:01PM

Update on August 26, 2016 at 8:02AM

REF: CHG0038108, PRB0040271
The Penn State border routers were upgraded to a newer version of operating systems code this morning. Subsequent testing shown that the issue with Internet connectivity could still be replicated. That testing revealed the network element that is triggering the outage events. Configuration changes have been put in place to mitigate that network element. At a later date, further troubleshooting will be required to identify specifically how that network element was able to trigger the outages. Work began at 4:30 AM this morning with all work and testing completed by 6:30 AM.

Original Alert

On Friday, 8/26, at 4:30 AM, new operating system code will be loaded on to the two Penn State border routers, Telecom5 and Windstream1. Testing this morning, 8/25, revealed that the failure condition causing a loss of Internet connectivity twice on Tuesday, 8/23, could be replicated. This failure state can occur on its own with no warning. For that reason it was determined that the best course of action is to load the new operating system code which fixes multiple bugs that appear to precipitate this failure condition. Immediately following the new code load Friday morning, additional testing will be done to confirm if the issue is resolved. This testing could interrupt Internet connectivity for periods of time between 4:30 AM and 7:00 AM on Friday morning. An additional announcement will be posted Friday morning with the results of that testing.
