Resolved: Temporary Freeze Issued for IMAP Accounts

Last updated on July 15, 2008 at 12:50PM

Update on July 10, 2008 at 4:09PM

On Tuesday, July 15, Information Technology Services (ITS) will offer the IMAP e-mail service to Penn State faculty, staff and students who use Penn State's e-mail services, including Penn State WebMail at https://webmail.psu.edu. The Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) is a service that permits e-mail clients to access messages stored on a remote server as if the messages were locally available on the user's own computer system. E-mail stored on Penn State's IMAP server can be accessed from a home computer, an office computer, or a laptop. IMAP is typically ideal for people who need to check e-mail on multiple machines on a regular basis, especially for those who travel regularly.

While the IMAP service is free-of-charge, interested individuals will need to apply for this service by filling out the Web-based enrollment form (available as of July 15) at: https://www.work.psu.edu/access/email/. Participants can expect their IMAP service to become active one business day after the application is received and processed.

Original Alert

At this time, the ITS Accounts Services Office will not accept requests for IMAP accounts until enhancements can be made to the current e-mail system that supports IMAP. Please note that the freeze is only temporary, and it will be lifted once the aforementioned enhancements have been made to the e-mail system. The freeze is expected to be lifted early in the fall 2007 semester; announcements will be made accordingly. Please note that the freeze does not impact any IMAP accounts currently in place. Those who have been using IMAP can continue to do so as usual.

As a result of the temporary freeze, updates have been made to http://aset.its.psu.edu/accounts/imap.html and http://aset.its.psu.edu/accounts/cost.html, and to the ITS For-Fee Services form located via http://aset.its.psu.edu/accounts/accountsforms/.

Questions should be directed to the ITS Accounts Services Office at accounts@psu.edu. Thank you for your patience, and we apologize if this has caused you/your staff any inconvenience. Please feel free to share this information with your staff/colleagues, as appropriate.
