As of 8 a.m. ET, on March 31, 2018, the block has been lifted.

A current work around to avoid email delivery errors is to use the email service\'s Web Client (instead of locally installed clients such as Thunderbird or Outlook).Penn State IT has implemented a fix by sending the email messages to other email services that are not being blocked to be processed. There will be a delay in the processing of these messages, but they will successfully send.


Per Hotmail, the vendor, this issue will be fixed within the next 48 hours. 


Penn State IT will update this alert as more information becomes available.

At this time,only authsmtp.psu.edu is being blocked by Microsoft.

Original Alert

As of 3:00 a.m. ET, on March 29, 2018 Microsoft began rejecting email sent by one of 
Penn State's outgoing email servers. Clients such as Outlook, Thunderbird, 
Apple Mail, Android Mail, and iOS Mail may have trouble sending email to 
addresses that end with hotmail.com/live.com.

Penn State IT staff members have contacted Microsoft, and we believe this issue
will be resolved this weekend. We are currently monitoring the issue, and more
information will be shared as information becomes available.
